A Fort Oglethorpe man scheduled to enter a guilty plea on fraud charges today in U.S. District Court in Rome changed his mind at the last minute and fired his lawyer in the courtroom, according to Department of Justice officials.
Kary Dean Head, 49, of Fort Oglethorpe is charged with nine counts related to defrauding more than 50 eBay users from July 2004 to September 2006.
He is accused of devising and executing a scheme offering 1-ounce American Silver Eagle coins on the Internet auction site and then never supplying the winning bidders with the items paid for, according to court documents.
Head was charged and made a first appearance in September 2006. His trial was set to begin Monday.
