SAN JOSE, Calif., March 23 Online U.S. payment service PayPal is working on a new payment method for mobile devices, a published report said Friday.

The new service, which PayPal expects to launch this the year, would let businesses offer a PayPal payment option to people who visit a version of their Web site built to be accessed by wireless handheld devices, The Wall Street Journal reported.

A person could visit the Web site for a pizza parlor or concert-ticket vendor using the Web browser on a cell phone or other mobile device like a BlackBerry, for instance, and make a payment using PayPal, the newspaper said.

The service is intended to appeal to young people and business people who use the Internet through cell phones, a PayPal spokeswoman said.

PayPal, owned by eBay Inc., launched a service last year that lets people send text messages to transfer money to each other.

There is no way I'd 'ever' do this - if they can't keep the site secure when we're all 'grounded' - why in heaven's name would I trust wireless transmission to be secure - .... - yet another way to spend sellers' monies - stupidly!!!! Rolling Eyes Cool

Oh exactly !!! With the security issues eBay has right now, I'd never trust that they will get a moble version secure.

I also don't trust that the phone companies would get their end secure. After all phones are "cloned" now just by being close enough to another user. I wouldn't doubt that someone would be able to intercept the info about the PP account while I was using it.

If it was secure and infra-red , for example to use with vending machines , then the risk would be no worse then using ATM card or trusting thee clerk at a store doesnt have a hacker's extra swipe box under the counter.

Its only a matter of time before wireless payments hit it big

BUT....it sure took a dammmm long time for Canucks to catch on to SMS !
It only started to ramp up couple years ago , and even now its mostly teenagers and executives with large swaths of the public still don't know what it is

Nearly 15 years behind Europe and Asia just on SMS front

Where I am, most merchants to not take your card - the customer does the swipe. The exception is at restaurants where you have sit-down service. As far as ATM, I only use mine at my bank. While this can be an inconvenience, I make no exceptions - for my own comfort...

I worked in the technology industry for a long while for a large company - and while most companies do all they can to help secure transactions, data, etc. -- I don't have any level of comfort that ebaY aligns itself in the same manner.

I typically use cash at sit-down restaurants for the exact reasons stated above. It's a scary world out there, and everyone has a different comfort level, and I know that on my radar for secure and safe transactions, ebaY and PP are not even off the ground!! Wink
