I am using joomla 1.0.12 and the latest version of virtuemart I get the following error when adding any items to the basket:

The encoded file /home/pctwales/public_html/administrator/components/com_virtuemart/classes/payment/googlecheckout/googlecheckout.php has expired or is corrupt.

any ideas?

Rob how did you upload googlecheckout.php? You can use joomlaxplorer or if you used ftp make sure you upload it in binary mode.

I used Dreamweaver 8 and I have since tried a 3rd party ftp, FileZila and used binary mode which has now fixed the problem.

I'm actually experiencing the same problem yet uploading via Fetch or joomlaxplorer are not fixing it... any thoughts?

When you upload with JoomlaXplorer make sure that the files doesn't already exist. Uploading the files with fetch gives the files permission of your user account while uploading with JoomlaXplorer gives it the permission of your web server. So if you upload with fetch first JoomlaXplorer doesn't have the proper rights to over write the files.

Also since you are using FreeBSD you might also want to try the loaders for FreeBSD at this link https://www.ioncube.com/loaders.php

If you are still having problems you can just email or pm a temp super admin account and I will take a look at it.

Alright, just to provide a follow up, I removed all the files and worked with JoomlaXplorer for uploading the files and we were successful. Now I just need to have my client hand over the correct merch key.

I may have another client interested in Google Checkout as well, I'll be sure to let you know how that one turns out
