Hi! I still pop in here now and then to read news and I HAD to sign in and respond to your post, Maggie.
As the original owner of the group, I can't tell you HOW many times that I had individual group members chastise ME for being a dictator, but it was a considerable number.
What made the YAuctionSellers group unique was that we had the "ear" of the techs that worked on the auction site and the Y! auction venue manager.
Yahoo!'s "goofy policies" made it almost impossible for them to interact with the group members directly - because they weren't members of Yahoo!'s "public relations" team. So the techs had to get outside e-mail addresses and do "end-runs" around the system to interact personally with the members and moderators of the group.
Early on, we made the decision to TRY and keep the "chatty" and off-topic conversation down in the group, so that the meager Y! staff that had been allocated to Yahoo! Auctions could focus on the things that group members felt they needed to make selling at Y! Auctions better and easier. Our fear was that if the group went TOO far afield, the tech staff might stop monitoring the group posts altogether. After all, they were doing it in an effort to make things better for sellers and as a means to spot problems early and perform their jobs better - often seeing problems posted in the group long before the trouble reports cleared through Yahoo! Customer Service and made it over to them.
As was demonstrated in this thread, it's easy to get off-topic and get chatty in these type forums. No doubt it's aggravating to the posters that want to chat and socialize and feel that those personal goals are being unfairly reined in!
Moderators never get it right 100% of the time! It gets tough at times when you have to balance the rights of the individual with the goals of the group or web-site. We didn't always agree with each other!
I'll be honest. I am biased! I think the truth was stated when it was stated that everyone, including the BEST mods, are biased! However, I always tried to temper that bias, do my best to never let it affect my moderation decisions, and moderate from a position of fairness to all. I'm human - I failed a few times! I probably failed a few more times than I think I did! But I think MOST moderators make that effort. And I KNOW that Angelo, Lisa, Erin and Bill did!
So, Maggie, I'm glad that I didn't step on your toes back when I owned the group! Like I said, I know I stepped on some others!
But I feel I should defend Angelo and the other moderators of the group. Their task was harder than mine ever was when I was involved with the group. There was a lot going on with Yahoo during that time! The entire tech team had changed and Angelo was having a hard time reestablishing the good relationship that was enjoyed with the prior "techies". The techs' workload had increased as well, and some techs were already being pulled from working on auctions to work on other projects. These happenings were shared with some of the moderators of the group "in confidence" and "off the record", so it was impossible to share exactly what was happening at the time within the group. Had the information been publicly shared, the auctions manager would have pulled the plug on ANY interaction with the group, since the dialog happening was against Yahoo! company policy anyway.
I'm certain that Angelo, Lisa, Erin, and Bill have performed their tasks as moderators of that group with selfless purpose. That purpose was to be of service to and to represent independent online sellers who listed on Yahoo! Auctions. They tried to do everything they could to make the selling experience better, provide a venue where the Yahoo! techs might notice if there was a problem, and sellers could help other sellers when the wheels were completely coming off at Yahoo! Auctions.
I want to thank them all! They've devoted a LOT of time to the effort! And the ONLY reimbursement they received is the knowledge that they may have made a little difference in the lives and livlihoods of a group of people that have had plenty of struggles in their attempts at online selling!
While I'm at it, I want to thank the moderators of this forum for their service to online sellers, as well! You have done a wonderful job giving independent sellers a venue where they can get information and learn from their peers!
Regards to all!
