PostPosted: Sat Jul 12, 2008 1:09 am   Post subject:  Generic Scam #1  Back to top

I have started getting a series of scam attempts inolving Check, Cashiers Check and Money Order.

I am a michigan resident so I do some advertising on MLive.com. Most of my scam attempts are coming from listings through this particular site. Don't know if these people are doing specific targeting of the site, but I have had several attempts.

They start out using broken English. Refer to a specific item (three times camcorder and 1 time DVD set).

They start by stating their method of payment is Check, Cashiers Check or Money Order. When I respond that I do not accept these payment forms, they come back a second time stating their preferred method of payment (same). I suggest Pay pal, Alert pay and Google Checkout to no avail. Eventual they stop emailing.

The last attempt started in the same fashion, decided to go with Pay Pal. Pay Pal payment was pending and then disappeared. They then approached me with Mony Gram. I decided this would be OK as long as I had the $$ in hand before shipping.

So I get what looks like a notice from Money gram/Money Gram International.

After contacting them both by phone to customer service discovering that Money Gram required 8 digit code and Money Gram International requiring 7 digit code, the fake email listed an elongated Transaction Code with a combo of numbers and letters.

I told the customer by email that I needed the proper code and the emails stopped. I haven't actually done anything yet, but I saved all the emails and intend to place a scam section in my site documenting the emails and particularly the email addresses and fake logos for the scammers.

I guess I can't specifically accuse them of scamming, but since they were adamant about making a purchase and still haven't nor did they indicate they didn't want to make the purchase I don't think there is any question.

Out of a paranoia I guess, I save the emails add the address to contacts and the3y show up online as contacts. These people are not rocket scientists.

If you haven't already had this one, be on the lookout for it.

Micheal
