Overstock.com told users on its discussion boards it would be naming a new Director of Auctions in 1 to 2 weeks. The announcement will coincide with the relaunch of the discussion boards, which will become available to all members of Overstock.com sitewide. Overstock will integrate the Auctions Forums into the new community site and will condense the existing discussions into six forums. In addition to the new Director of Auctions, there will be a new Community Moderator.

From the article ............

"Overstock.com's Social Media Product Manager Byron Winward made the announcement and said Overstock.com plans to aggressively improve the Forums, Guides, Blogs and upcoming Video sites."

Notice the glaring absence of any mention of upgrading the Auction site. Shocked

While the Forums, Guides, Blogs and upcoming Video site may bring a few users to the site ........ management of Overstock continues to steadfastly refuse to upgrade the auction site with features that were promised 2 or 3 years ago.

WHile it has been a few years since I took cypering in the one-room schoolhouse,

BUT
(a short return from summer vacation at the beach)

"Blocked Bidder List" is NOT spelled B-L-O-G
and
"Ability to cancel bids" is NOT spelled V-I-D-E-O.

Maybe I've just been missing the whole point for the last few years.
YA THINK ???

It's actually just a giant virtual game of chicken to see who blinks first.

Overstock promises but never delivers on upgrades
while the users continue to wait for what they feel they were promised.

Will Overstock cave, and finally throw a bone to the users ??
OR
Will the users realize the futility of the wait, and leave??

We'll all just have to wait and see.
Same bat-time.
Same bat-channel.

I made the horrific mistake of registering at Overstock several months ago.

Since that time, I have received a continuous stream of Unsolicited Commercial Email SPAM from these people, despite dozens of emails from me directing them to stop.

Today, I have filed formal complaints against Overstock with all the SPAM reporting sites and agencies, BBB, etc.

The folks at Overstock just don't get it.

BD, I don't see Overstock Auctions throwing a bone to sellers. They're doing what they've always done: getting members to provide promotions for the site. Under ideal conditions, we paid and promoted. Guess the wind is out of that sail so they've devised this freebie method.

2004 - 2006 they got sellers to bring in buyers, and pay for the privileged. 2007 the traffic declined. 2008 they're tapping into the community to provide free content to increase search engine presence. Same trick, different ball.

According to Alexa, 4% of Overstock traffic visits the Auction division. 2% of that is probably sellers doing their thing. Overstock has never lied about what is at the heart of all they do, even when they pretend otherwise.

"It's all about the O."

Though it's a pain, perhaps you could register on some sort of free email account of which you'll never ever use (yahoo or hotmail) and then change your email account info at the O. I've heard about this same situation SF and it's always seems it's up the the registered member to take matters into their own hands when ridding themselves of the spam emails from the O.
Good luck!

Thanks for the response and info!

As it turns out, my extreme, expletive laced, all-out assault on Overstock yesterday *may* have put an end to the SPAM... I'll have to wait and see.

I'll wait the ten days mentioned before determining if my "campaign" was successful. Wink

Laughing Now when I did that they kicked me off their forums, then when I "let it all out" about their beloved leader Patrick Byrnes, they kicked me off their auction site.
NO MORE SPAM EMAILS FROM THE O TO ME anymore Very Happy

Sometimes, you just have to get nasty IMHO.

Thanks for keeping us updated.

So Byron is now a "Social Media Product Manager"? Duh, why? I must be missing something here.

I can understand sites like Amazon and Yahoo that sprang organically from the internet itself and grew to emcompass all apects of the uses of the internet in it's infancy. Shopping and socializing do intersect in those sites because they grew into it naturally.
But in this day and age with all the available choices for socializing, I have no idea why a retailer would be trying to imitate them. I never did understand that aspect of Overstock, and I never will.
If they had ever focused on just retail, and encompassed individual sellers in that plan maybe they coulda been a contender.

But instead all this distractionary focus has just eroded them.

The main thing I see in this silly announcement is that once again, Overstock is focused on revamping the Community Message Boards! I have lost count, would that be 5, or maybe 6 times now?

And new auction director number 4? Egads, they just do not get it.

Sciencefare, GL with getting out of your registration intact.

You also need to go back and recheck your user ID for a while. Sometimes they plaster a big red "Disabled' that imply you have been a bad seller. They did this to one guy simply because he withdrew his credit card info.
Hope for your sake you created a seperate name for selling there.

I was there too when all this stuff happened, and I also left in a huff. I didn't cancel my account though, I just left. That was in late 2006. I didn't list anything for over a year. With this last go around on Ebay back in February, I thought I would list a few auctions on Overstock, and see what happened. I have to say, I have been doing very well there ever since I went back. I don't go to the chat rooms much, or pay much attention to all the fluff, but what can I say? I am getting the buyers. There are alot of things I don't like about Overstock, but I can't argue the numbers. I can see my profit vs cost right at the top of my home page, and I am making the big bucks!

I am selling on 2 auction sites, and still have my Ebay store. The store pays for itself with profit left over for me, and between the 2 auction sites, I am finally back in the black. Before, my Ebay bill alone was killing me, mine ran about $400.00 to $600.00 a month. My last bill was $24.50. Things are finally working for me again. Selling on 3 sites isn't easy, but worth it.

The funniest part to me, is what I hear all the time at PSU. The 2 most hated auction sites besides Ebay, are the 2 that I am selling on, and doing very well with. Both OLA and Overstock get a bad rap on PSU, but hey, I'll just keep taking my money to the bank! The chat rooms are just that. Chat. It really doesn't mean much. Only about 10% of users ever even go into the chat rooms at auction sites. That leaves 90% who could care less. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Exactly Brightgems!

As a buyer I don't give much credence to the bashing that goes on in chat rooms. I love shopping on O; the sellers I've dealt with there have almost all been great. A couple of bad apples in the bunch that I've bought from, but I never lost any money. I will have to check out your listings there, as you have the attitude of a seller I would like to do business with sometime.

I suspect your success is also because you spend less time in chat rooms every day, and more time actually working at selling. Wink

Hmmmmm, there is an irony in the finger pointing at PSU!

Brightgems I congratulated you for your jewelry sales just the other day. Overstock right now has 6 pieces of pottery, compared with the 25000 I have to compete with at ebay, and I have been considering giving it another go.
I asked you directly how the weekly billing works out? An answer to that would be higly appreciated! They didn't have that policy when I sold there.
Is it true that they only give you Overstock listing credits for the money they take on the sale, which is taken so quickly you may not even realize you had a NPB?

The problems at OS are not the result of PSU threads.

Cheddarmoon, you actually reinforced what many have said here that the selling over there is people buying from each other due to message board participation! That is one of the prevailing perceptions about OS! A little community where there are a select few that the starting sellers better appease by buying from them.
It's very nice that you plan to go and shop with Brightgems, and it was good of you to share that info with PSU folks!

Nope, it most definitely is not what is said here at PSU that holds that place back. Overstock does that very well without any help from any small sellers or people that participate at PSU.

I understand that they didn't mention any changes and updates / upgrades to the store, but I think they would let the person that they name the new director to see how everything is and then make changes based on what he sees. We don't know how familiar the guy / girl is with the auction site and how it is ran and operated. I bet they'll have some sort of update once he is able to analyze what's going on.

Mud pies. You throw it at the wall and see what sticks.

Overstock Press Release about Mudpies

Why put that idiot in charge of a "social media product" mudpie? Who knows.
