Amazon Takes On eBay’s PayPal With Payments Service

Amazon.com (AMZN) has quietly launched “Checkout by Amazon,” an e-commerce checkout service for online merchants that is taking on eBay’s (EBAY) PayPal Merchant Services offering, several analysts noted today.

Derek Brown, an analyst with Cantor Fitzgerald who had previously noted that such a service might be in the works, says the new service allows Amazon.com customers to use their stored payment and shipping information on participating merchant sites. He notes that the service provides businesses a way to manage shipping charges, sales tax and promotions, as well as post-sales activities including refunds, cancellations and chargebacks. Brown, who has a Sell rating on eBAY, says the development “has added to our concerns around eBay shares.”

Stifel Nicolaus analyst Scott Devitt also noted that the Checkout service has gone live, putting the company in competition not only with eBay but also with Google (GOOG) Checkout.

Devitt advises that he does not expect Amazon’s move to have a near-term impact on eBay, but says that “the service warrants monitoring by investors for profit pool risk at PayPal.”

eBay is going to allow Amazon payments on it's site around the same time it allows Google Checkout. When pigs fly. It may work on other sites, but eBay is too controling to let it happen at their site.

Just another competitor chipping away at the eBay/PayPal foundation. The more they try to insulate themselves from competition the worse it will get.

I wouldn't expect to see it on ebay, but depending on cost, it's a serious threat to merchant processors who cater to small to medium web sellers.

LOL…This is just what eBay did not want, now if only Google would turn up the heat on Google Checkout…eBay I bet Q4 is not looking quite so good even with Christmas .

eBay are well and truly worried ..Just yesterday they were asking people to partake in a survey for SELLERS??? (Stating with eBay OZ)…they know they have gone too far & the pain isn’t over yet…..serves the arrogant fools right.

Get ready for a flood of promo deals and offers…which basically mean nothing as most conscientious members have left the building

Perhaps your nice little business of what 10. 20, 100, 1,000 items sales a day make you so special to eBay/internet buyers..I think not, but enjoy as it means nothing in the big picture (unless you sell 1,000 + a day on eBay...but i think closer to 10/20)

Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney used the 9/11 terrorist attack to push a neo-conservative plan to ignore international law and invade two countries, resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the continued occupation of those countries with over 100,000 US troops, over 4,000 of whom are now dead.

Besides violating the UN charter with his unprovoked attack on Iraq, Bush Jr also violated the US constitution with numerous abuses of executive power, such keeping prisoners held without trial for years at Guantanamo Bay.

He continues to threaten other countries with his "all options are on the table" rhetoric towards Iran, although Israel has over 200 nuclear weapons and the US has more chemical, biological and nuclear weapons than any other country. Also, he has expanded the Pentagon's budget to a mind-boggling $650 billion a year.

I could write a book (there are many) about the corporate-driven policies of the Bush Jr administration, but perhaps the biggest legacy Bush has left the world is his deliberate inaction on climate change initiatives, which have accelerated the "tipping points" of global warming.

The world would be much better if we could fast-forward the calendar to Jan 20, 2009, and send George Bush Jr back to his Texas ranch and Dick Cheney back to his corporate CEO office. That is the farewell address I am waiting for!

Sounds to me that you have a ax to grind. As far as International law goes, who gives a s**t what the world thinks. They don't show up in the US until they want or need something but God help us if we need their help. As far as the UN charter goes, that's a joke. We need to start charging them rent for the prime real estate they occupy. As far as the idiots in Gitmo, they're prisoners of war and their damn lucky they survived to get to Gitmo. They aren't covered by the US constitution, you need to be an American citizen if you believe what the constitution says. You probably have never read it. I was in New York City on September 11th 2001, don't tell me we violated International Law. I watched it happen. I ran from the dirt and dust when the buildings came down. As far as all options on the table, good. We need some balls in the White House because there sure aren't any in the rest of the world. I agree on one thing, Bush does and has done some stupid things. You mention climate change. Do you really believe that a bunch of ants can change the climate in a forest because that's what your saying. Human beings think too much of themselves. We're like those ants in a forest. CO2 levels have and will change based on many variables. I bet your one of these people that would vote for Obama.

I hope TERRYP reads this. He pushed the wrong button with his post. Political statements need to be made in the voting booth. I'll make a big statement in November.

Amazon taking on Pay pal will work for every site but E Bay so I doubt it will make much difference as far as Pay pal is concerned. E Bay will never allow that form of payment on their site. They'd be cutting their own throats.

The usual stuff, be all things to all people, links that don't work, or links that return you to the page you were just on.

Ebay hasn't done any sellers any favors, for sure. Everything they do has one goal, increase revenue. Having sold a few million bucks worth of stuff there I am used to them and know where to click to get away from their "click here to spend more money" syndrome.

I sold my eBay stock, stick a fork in them. I don't own any Amazon stock and I ain't going to either.

One day one of these other newer sites will click, and both of them will be history. I hope it's soon....*EB

I defy anyone to post a listing and then try to edit it.

Amazon is a bit less user friendly than ebay. I’ve never been able to edit an existing listing, but I know it can be done. I had a listing created by another sellers change and mess up our selling because the original creator changed the listing details to another product entirely.

If I need to correct or update something I just create new listing and let the old fade off the site.

I find it nearly impossible to even find my two listings, their search engine sucks. All that "required" BS, but almost none of it shows up once I do find the listing.

I’ve been selling on AZ about 10 months and now that I have learned how their search system works I can find anything quickly. But it can be daunting for new user, and it’s somewhat skewed towards existing sellers.

Have faith that Amazons regular customers know how to find what they want. Especially if you sell a product line that already is selling on AZ. If your price is fair, they will buy.
