Hey there all am new here. i was selling on ebay but they just became too much to deal with. I sell a lot of gently pre-owned clothing and accessories as well as vintage. What's the best online auction site that is the alternative to e-bay?

Hi Hylton,

Naturally I'm partial to my site, so I admit I can't give you a very objective recommendation. Smile

But I was curious about your name. We had a buyer at Atomic Mall with the first name "Hylton" a short while back. I remember the name because it's so unusual. That wasn't you by any chance was it?

Mike

Welcome to PSU!

May I suggest that you perhaps try out several sites and see which one will fit your needs....Sometimes it takes a little while to find the right site and testing out several may make it an easier choice. Any of the sites in the Auction Count LIst on the left side of the page here, would all be good places to check into...Also, it never hurts to ask questions and read here at PSU for information..

CNote Smile

First of all, welcome to the PSU forums, a place where you can learn of hundreds of small alternative auction sites. Take the time, do your research and pick the one that best fits your needs.
When time allows, check out kenzy.com and see just how many alterntive online selling venues we sellers can choose from.

Thanks for joining the forum Very Happy

I can suggest 4 good sites:

AlsoShop.com
PlunderHere.com
YourHighBid.com
OvernightAuctions.com

OvernightAuctions is currently in construction, I believe, but is always accepting new members, just don't expect instant sales, or anything (on any site for that matter right now).

Good luck!

Hi Hylton,
Really you should try another alternatives because Ebay is very unfair with small/medium and honest sellers.
I suggest you to try:

EBID (www.ebid.net)
ECRATER (www.ecrater.com)
BLUJAY (ww.blujay.com)
IOFFER (www.ioffer.com)
OLA - ONLINE AUCTIONS (www.onlineauction.com)

I am new here and I am an ex-Ebay seller also. This is a good place for sellers understand and learn many good things.
If I can help you, please let me know.
Very welcome !

I am going to give an objective opinion instead of suggesting my favorite sites, since I really don't have a favorite:
AlsoShop.com - Little to No traffic, only 100 members
PlunderHere.com - LOTS of problems since the owner of Alsoshop abandoned it in March. Just changed scripts, many errors, wait a year.
YourHighBid.com - Nice community, SLOW site overloaded with graphics, no traffic. Only 500 members felt the need to join in a year.
OvernightAuctions.com - Abandoned for 6 months, also very SLOW.
EBID (www.ebid.net) - OK if you want to ship overseas
ECRATER (www.ecrater.com) - OK if you can stand just a couple hundred bucks a month
BLUJAY (ww.blujay.com) - Not even listed in Google
IOFFER (www.ioffer.com) - COUNTERFEIT CAPITOL
OLA - ONLINE AUCTIONS (www.onlineauction.com) - $8 a month, lower traffic than most sites on the auction site count.

On the other hand, you can start a website quickly with the following, and get your own customers:
Prestostore (built in HEAVY traffic)
PSU Stores
CHshops
You can build your own free with some help:
Zen Cart
OSCommerce
Sell vintage/collectible items here, if they are antiques:
Tias
Ruby Lane
Handmade items here:
Etsy

There are also hundreds of sites on Kenzy's list that can get you a sale or two (literally) a month.

A new fun one that is not yet proven but absolutely puts joy back into listing is

bonanzle.com

I like Etsy a lot for my art. I have only sold 2 items there, but that is because I have not yet come up with a small ticket item (am working on that.) So I don't blame Etsy.

OLA - I like the energy of the sellers and have sold 3 items there, but the site drives me a bit nutty from a visual and listing perspective.

Plunderhere - having problems.

eCrater - love the layout. Some people say they are doing well on it. I never got any reaction to my quilt fabrics.

eBid - up and coming, but while I have hundreds of items out there on the US side and they are getting traffic, no sales.

Bonanzle is unproven and still being built, but I absolutely love the ease of listing and the crisp look of it. The builders seem to be around a lot and interacting with users too, so it doesn't appear to be someone's weekend project. I am throwing support behind them and plan to ramp up over the next months.

The owner of Plunderhere did NOT abandon it in March, she sold it to someone overseas who promised to bring it "up there!" and has yet to show anything for it. He has changed scripts twice that I know of, and yes, there are several glitches in the system... but what site doesn't have some problems?? (The previous owner now owns a new site that's doing pretty well!) Confused

Alsoshop has went to PHPPROBID script, and yes we may be only just over 100 members but the spiders and search bugs are working and we're getting new members on almost a daily basis. IT IS A VERY PROMISING SITE! I'm one of the original members there, so this may sound biased but trust me, it's worth at least a look, especially now that we have Probid. Very Happy

OvernightAuctions has a chance. I've heard the site was for sale, and if it did indeed sell, there's a possibility the buyer may actually bring it back. I think s/he will, actually. Just give them a chance, give them a couple of months to get back on track and get the glitches and the reputation problem remedified, ok? Let's be fair here, the new buyer has nothing to do with the old owner. Smile

I tried YourHighBid and for the first 2 months, did pretty well. It's a tight-knit community, lots of ONA's old members have switched over there, which explains the 500 members stats. I still have items listed there but have not sold squat in over 4 months. Embarassed

I forgot about iOffer and ePier, havent' been selling there myself in a LONG while... don't think I ever had a sale on ePier anyway and iOffer only very rarely so for me, they weren't worth the membership or effort to list.

OK off my soapbox now...

Actually, the owner of Plunderhere did abandon the site, which is why there are so many problems. She agreed to stay on as Admin in the deal (well documented here and at PH) and left within a week, without any reason given. All the while she was shown to never have cared about the site and members, leaving them in the hands of a "moron" (her words.) Running Alsoshop's opening behind the new owner's back and lying to most members the entire time, while emailing a select few members and moderators (many whom have since left) to move on over to Alsoshop, shows a complete lack of ethics. It's like quitting Coke, going to work for Pepsi, and secretly taking the most dependable employees and management... In the public sector, it's called a an antitrust violation and can get you in big trouble, but in Mo's case and the general OAI world, it was just Mo being a normal auction site owner out for themselves.

Even if you don't care about all that, the best reason to stay away from both sites is that they ARE PHPProbid sites, meaning they look exactly like 90% of the auction sites online today.

I really didn't want to bring the history back up, but since what I wrote was challenged.

I have been "lurking around" PSU for awhile.
I have listed on ebid, ioffer, ecrater, blujay, and webidz.
My listings are still there, but I rarely even log in anymore, couple of sales on ebid, one on ioffer. Been on both for months.

I too am throwing my support behind Bonanazle.com
I can see new members joining daily, and listing stats rising each day too.
I love the ease of use, and the look and feel of it too.
Closed my ebay store today, tired of paying more in fees than I sell.

I don't bash any sites, so no offense intended in above recap, just my personal experience being shared.

Good Luck, and take a look at bonanzle.com

I do want to add one thing...
Not all auction site owners are out for themselves. There are a few cherry-picked site owners and admins who really do want the sellers to be successful. But, the majority of those I see are not interested in anything other than feeding their egos.

OH COME ON!! Who are you anyway? Another "cloaked one" that we all know? Shocked

As for the phpProbid script, there is a lot of members who prefer that one over the RScript, and vice versa. The owners basically just go with the flow, demand of members, etc.

Leave Mo alone, please? There's a LONG story behind the leave of PH, and one I'm sure she doesn't want to re-hash or explain to everyone. It was her decision, and hers alone. Any members (such as I) who made the move to AS with her made the choice ON OUR OWN, not becuz she "took" us from PH. Shocked

I personally do not like PH, but I used to... nor do I like a lot of the newly implemented staff. I still list there "on demand" from customers who did not wish to switch sites, but not very often. It was a good site in its prime, but now... (zips lips) Rolling Eyes
