Faster, more reliable checkout on eBay
Starting this fall, we're moving to an electronic checkout process that's faster and more reliable for sellers and buyers. As part of this move, checks and money orders will no longer be accepted on eBay, although buyers can still use these payment methods for item pick-up, at the seller's discretion. In addition, the electronic payment methods will be fully integrated into eBay checkout. For example, if a seller has an internet merchant account, a buyer will be able to directly enter a credit card and never have to leave the site.

Today, items paid with check or money order are 80% more likely to result in an item not received (INR) than those paid with credit card or PayPal. Also, buyers who pay with check or money order are 50% more likely to leave negative feedback than those who pay with electronic methods. So starting in late October, 2008, we are moving to 100% electronic payments - credit cards, ProPay, or PayPal.

This means that sellers will be able to offer credit card payments through their own merchant accounts, and payments through ProPay and/or PayPal, with all payment methods integrated into the checkout process on eBay. Seller will also get paid faster and be able to ship items quicker. And remember, for those buyers and sellers who use PayPal, we're backing every eligible transaction with our buyer and seller protections. (See more information on paperless payments and more on terms for the PayPal Buyer and Seller Protection plans.)

This cuts out more buyers. Keep it up eBay so the buyers look elsewhere. I want to go there!

No where in the annoucement it says PayPal only, "credit cards, ProPay, or PayPal." You can still use the other methods ONLY if its local pickup so u can hand it in person, im sure alot of buyers say they mailed the paper money where sellers dont get it, this elimates so buyers dont give that excuse anymore(lost in mail).

No, it doesnt say Paypal only but it may as well...it isnt worth the trouble or the expense for most small sellers to set up a merchant account and eBay knows this...I am not familiar with ProPay (they are apparently new to the equation) but dollars to donuts says that ProPay will not be feasible for smaller sellers...wanna bet?

Title should be:

"ebay drives customers off by eliminating checks and money orders"

Require sellers to offer a a credit card option, I'm OK with that.

But banning ck/mo just drives off buyers who can't or won't use them.

For those buyers who contact you about check or money order, just send them to your free site. If they insist on using eBay then put the listing in Mature Audiences...

Well there is one thing we agree on.....

But I am NOT ok with trusting a CC company with high dollar sales - NO WAY.

Hopefully they will provide exceptions for sales over "X" amount.....they already seem to have made provisions in this for Business and Industrial, Auto, and porn. And I don't know why - is there expensive porn?

Anyway - they told me on the phone that it would be for everything, so hopefully sales over the $2000 protection limits will be excluded at some point......

No matter what you can NEVER get happy about ANY ebay changes that seem to go in your favor because there is always a poke from a sharp stick right afterwards.....most of the time in an artery

From what I see, if you have your own merchant account it must be approved, configured to function from and linked to the eBay checkout system or you will need to use paypal.

I couldn't find any information on Propay, but I assume it is a Paypal product.

Hmm, lets see...

eBay has decided how I can be paid, even though I only get about 1 money order per month and already accept paypal, they want that fee.
Hey I know...why don't they just charge us the paypal fee for the amount of the money order or check?

eBay plans to tell me how much I can charge to ship based on what some buyers have said is reasonable. And we all know how knowledgeable and reasonable some buyers are.

and then...

eBay will expect me to pay nearly 12 times more to list each store item as fixed price items. I will close my eBay store at that point.

Instead of changing eBay express to be more amazon like to compete with them on products that are common to amazon. They are closing it.

Finally eBay has come up with a plan to drive all small sellers and their buyers away.

Which should free up these great minds to figure out how to piss of and drive away the big sellers and their buyers.

ProPay is a merchant service offered by Wells Fargo Bank. Its probably the same bank that eBay and PayPal uses.. But they are not directly affiliated with them.. This is a service meant for business owner and certainly not for smaller private sellers. The same with having your own merchant account. Again something that is not feasible for the smaller seller.. But give it some time, I am sure these merchant services will see there is an untapped market for the small private eBay (or which ever service you may use.) sellers, and they will create a service for them.. I am seriously considering a merchant service personally for my business... PayPal tends to refuse to challenge chargebacks even when evidence is provided from sellers.. There is a whole reasoning behind it, but lets just say you can see why they tend not to challenge chargebacks..
Basically, if you want to accept credit cards, chargebacks is simply a price of doing business that way. Remember sellers prefer and use credit cards more often simply because they get the protection from them.. I mean how would you feel after purchasing a 2 karat diamond engagement ring for thousands only to find out its a fake.. The person who sold it, chances are knew it was a fake. So when they get a chargeback good for them..
Its simple.. You list and sell honestly your chances of a chargeback are minimal. I have sold over 3500 items in my first year of business and received one chargeback.. Big deal! And no I did not do anything wrong. Item broke during shipping, and the buyer caused an issue where an insurance claim could not be obtained.. Long boring story.. So so what.. OK I lost $150.00 in the whole deal, but I sold well over 100k in items. Profit to me approx 47k. So I will take the $150.00 loss.. Like I said.. Its the price of doing business..

I also think that the government had a hand in this move to electronic payments only. The recent housing bill that Bush signed will have the merchant accounts and paypal reporting the payments received. I think they want to make sure they get every penny reported in case some sellers wanted to hold out on income reported from checks and money orders. It's just a hunch on my part but with the way the government is sticking it's nose in to every crevice of our lives it wouldn't surprise me.

Hmmm...now that I think about it. Didn't McCain say that Meg is a person on his most admired list? Kinda cozy. Shocked

Where is this announcement? I just looked on the UK eBay site and the only thing I see is encouragement for sellers to open a shop not that they are closing it..
