Yahoo Financials - eBay Message Board

Attempted Craigslist Scam!
A few weeks ago I posted about my friend's success selling concert tickets on Craigslist. Well he has now scene the other side of that coin.
He sold a pair of tickets to a concert, received full payment via PayPal, shipped via Priority Mail with delivery confirmation and insurance to the verified PayPal address. The recipient claimed to not have received the tickets...the USPS claimed they were delivered...the recipient says she moved since signing up for PayPal and didn't change her address...and wanted two new tickets. Well my friend called Ticketmaster and arranged to have two new tickets issued to her if she brought a letter from him explaining what happened...well when he asked for her NEW address so he could send a certified letter with the Ticketmaster info...all of a sudden she said never mind.
Looks like the CL honeymoon is over!
My comment:
Moral of this story - Where PayPal goes, the scams are sure to follow. |

CraigsList was never safer than any other site, its' just that the majority of early listings were sold locally, cash payment, pick up only. kind of hard to scam that kind of sale. |

I think it would be kind of hard to scam someone using another
cc processor. PP is the scammers best friend, so if you use say...
your own MA or GCO to process a payment... all will be well.
Just don't fall for the 'ship to grandmas address' crap.
If the card address is NOT verifiable via the AVS system,
simply don't process the transaction and tell your buyer to send a check or MO.
They will either pay on YOUR terms or they wont...
You will of only been out a little time if they don't and you will still have
your merchandise and the scammer will move on to someone else.
Bottom line is using common sense.
If someone wants to purchase something from you and
it's high dollar and they want to use PayFraud to pay. Simply say NO.
Better yet.
DON'T advertise that you would take a PP payment
and the scammer will never even try to scam you.
They will know you are too savvy and no easy mark for them.
They will move along. |

Excellent advice, xpp!
Now, if a few of the MBAs at eBay had an ounce of good ole common sense, the company might not be in the shape it's in.
IMO - JD & Company seem to fall into the criminal mentality category of individuals who would rather make a dishonest dime than an honest dollar. |

So, as a victim of a fraudulent seller, I have to say that however PayPal works, it does help those of us who are scammed get our money back. Having been unemployed for 9 months, I cannot begin to tell you how much I needed that money back (I bought the item, and it was never sent... they printed out the shipping label for the item but never delivered it to the post office. That's a way a seller can scam a buyer). Luckily, PayPal had managed to freeze this persons account with my money still in it, and as such they were able to get it back to me.
Most of you know me, by now, and know what I think of eBay and PayPal (in case you don't, I say screw them both), but I just wanted to say that no online processor like PayPal, Google Checkout, etc. will ever match the more expensive credit card processors in terms of security for both buyer and seller. In the end people are going to get scammed on both ends of the spectrum through using these services. These are the chances we take. My example above was one of 3 times in 4 years where I have been scammed by eBay sellers... I never got refunded anything from the other two.
As a sellers, I've never had any chargebacks, though I have not sold anything on feebay since February... which leads me to believe that it's eBay that is the major problem, and not so much PayPal. eBay is a rat's nest of fraudsters now, which is of course going to increase the cost of doing business there. The die-hard sellers that have stuck around with ebay are going to learn this, if they haven't already, the hard way.
Granted, my items may not generate the type of theft these stories reflect, so I can't say my experiences are all-encompassing. If you are worried, follow Xppman's advice. But to hold PayPal to the high standard you would like to (and so would I) without doing so for GCO, RME, etc etc is kind of unfair. Google checkout won't do a damn thing for anyone who get's scammed.
I don't know how PayPal can do better to meet both sides needs, which is not to say they are good... far from. I just mean the problem is complicated, and I don't think I know what the answers are, except for one:
PayPal needs to keep track of the weight of items. PayPal needs to apply the same standards of mailing to both sellers AND those who wish to return for refund. If they did that, I do believe 90% of fraud that sellers worry about will disappear. |

Batman
The whole SPP and BPP have been a ruse from day one.
They didn't have those bogus polices before eBay purchased the company.
(You know this, you have been burnt twice already , but I'm sure you 'thought' you were covered)...
It's all an illusion. A CON job.
PP looks at transactions across the board to find transactions to screw someone else on...
to 'make up' for those times they have to 'protect' the buyer or seller with their convoluted
half assed 'protection policies'.
Think about it.
It's NOT working out well for them anymore.
They MUST of been loosing their asses on these scams being perpetrated by both
scamming buyers and sellers....
Hence the new 21 day holds for sellers and the 'you must pay via PP' for buyers policy.
(A way for THEM to control the money losses they incur, with their fake asp 'protection' schemes)...
I think they are in deep doo doo and looking anywhere they can to continue
to fool the public that they are all that.
It simply isn't the case. IMO
Here's is just ONE example of PP lies.
They tout millions of users right there in plain site on their site.
What they DON'T tell you is that those numbers they tout are bogus.
If it states 200 million users. In reality, they have only 79 million active users.
So there's a lie right there. FALSE ADVERTISING
What else will they lie about?
Bottom line.
I will NOT trust a company who lies in my face and sets up policies designed to screw me over
and only protect THEM.
Just like a girlfriend or wife who screws me over, and/or lies to me but keeps taking my money
and/or taking advantage of my hospitality.
I WILL kick them to the curb. |

I have a positive note on my earlier May FEEasko with Preypal and a Fraudulent Buyer who even resold openly his ill-gotten gain on Fleecebay and claimed non-receipt and charged back.
After 4 months and with the FTC, BBB in San Jose, ICCC, USPS, and Arkansas' Attorney General all in assistance, Preypal finally rescinded the $ 100 on that joker's chargeback. I never give up and never give in to thieves. |
