So none of you have heard that Google is getting into the online auctions business? First they are launching Google online payments (which should start early next year) and then Google Auctions. They are probably the only ones who can give Ebay competiton, if not take over the #1 spot. I would be crapping my pants if I was Meg. Sellers are tired of getting ripped off by Ebay and I know alot of sellers that are going to Google once it launches. Ebay will be like Yahoo Auctions (a ghost town) after Google Auctions lauches. I personally can't wait. |

Yes, FFfan4life, there's a thread devoted to the topic:

I'm curious, have you discovered evidence of Google getting into the auction game? So far as I know, it's speculation - an educated guess - and hope, at best. |

I have found a few news articles from various websites which I will list below. I've heard from various financial stations that Google has purchased 2000 acres for a headquarters which will include space reserved for Google online payments as well as Google Auctions. I would say its a definite seeing that Google is branching out into everything and there is a very clear demand for another online auction site. They would be stupid not to. People I have talked to say that was why there was an additional stock offering by Google for shares of its stock. They wanted more capital to back up their online payments and auctions ventures. I want to also point out that Ebay is clearly scared of Google. They recently revised their policy to scare sellers into only accepting Paypal as an online payment. If you read the new policy, Ebay is trying to monopolize online payments. It has been doing it successfully for years and now sees Google as a threat and revised their policy to blackball Google's online payments. If I were Google, I would take Ebay to court.
Here is the link to the new Ebay policy:

Well that is the first time I have sen that part of the new policy, and it seems they have pretty well off'ed goggle from the start, just by stating they have to have a good history, well considering goggle will be just beginning in the payment acceptance dept That one statement knocks them off the board, It just doesn't make sense to me that noone goverment or otherwise does nothing about this, they are striving for a monopoly and are succeeding slowly but surely, hmmmmmm makes you wonder how many officials are getting kickbacks to kep their mouth shut, or how many powersellers are getting special treatment for going with the flow, now I know there are alotttttt of straight up powersellers so I hope I didn't ruffle any feathers, but I am sure there are a few that just like so many will do what ever to get ahead of the competition.... |

I've bought on Yahoo Auctions but can't see myself selling there. I make a lot of higher-end knit and crochet items and I simply can't compete with someone selling a poncho for $24.95 or less hand-made. Same thing happens on eBay, especially with M. Stewart ponchos. If someone didn't sell it at say $75 they would lower it to $35, then $25 and then $14.95. Well, I sell mine at a solid $52.50. The correct price should probably be $75 for something this big, but on this I tried to find a medium ground for something that is popular and I can still make something on it. Even at the show it was suggested that I was charging too little for my baby alpaca and silk shawl. I priced it at $225.
So that's my story about Ebay and Yahoo simply not being the place for someone like me. I've seen people on Ebay apologizing for the way they price their handcrafteds
Bottom line here: My business name is KittyLuv Needleart Collectibles and there's a reason for that and there's a reason why I look for classier auction sites and marketplaces like eCrater.
I also think that Yahoo Auctions would do better if they had a link on their main site to a standalone site called YahooAuctions.com and make it very prominent complete with a terrific new logo I went to Yahoo yesterday to check it out and I had to hunt for it. THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM and something that as a buyer has always bothered me about Yahoo The powers that be at Yahoo really, really should think about this. |

None of the big players, Yahoo, eBay, Google, MSN, are really interested
in user feedback. Feedback response is public relations. They've already
decided what they are going to do.
Yahoo is not looking to compete with eBay. That battle was lost years ago.
Yahoo is focusing on the Google model. Free listings with paid ads.
Four years of Yahoo Auctions sitting there like a ghost town is a lot to overcome.
Yahoo Auctions would be in better shape now, if it had been closed down
for the 4 years and reopened.
I am surprised at how slowly Yahoo's listing are growing. I thought they
would skyrocket. I'm not sure that's a bad thing. After no luck with iOffer
and Bidville, my items are selling again on Yahoo. I don't want to see my
items lost in a flood of listings.
Google Auctions? Has Google put anything together in less than 2 or 3 years?
I'm not anti-Google. I just believe that they are overrated. Froogle was a
flop. Their search has become polluted with useless results. Most of the
people who use Google groups only do so from a lack of alternatives.
Regardless of eBay's current maneuvers, I doubt if Google's payment
service does any better than Yahoo's defunct PayDirect service.
Maybe a slim chance if Google offers $5 to everyone that opens a new account. |
