How do you get yourself shown the in right hand side of the screen even when you are the lowest cost seller, amazon shows other sellers who are more expensive, is this based on feedback?

Also, has anyone had any success selling on Amazon?

It depends on what type/level of seller you are. Many features are only available to certain level merchants. Some levels you must ask or be invited to join.
