When San Mateo police recently busted a burglary ring suspected of nearly 100 crimes, they used pawnshop paperwork to track stolen goods back to the culprits.
It is not so easy when thieves turn to the Internet to unload hot merchandise.
For that reason, Assemblyman Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, is pushing a bill that will require online auction Web sites and auction drop off companies to provide data to the state government on all transactions. Law enforcement officials are lauding the idea, while online auction companies claim it is an attacking small business and looking to solve a problem that does not exist.
