Barack Obama, a 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, shattered more than 200 years of history Tuesday night by winning election as the first African-American president of the United States.

Obama reached the 270 electoral votes he needed for election at 11 p.m. ET, when NBC News projected that he would win California, Washington and Oregon.

Obama’s opponent, Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, called Obama to offer his congratulations at 11 p.m. ET, Obama’s chief spokesman, Robert Gibbs, told NBC News. Obama thanked McCain for his “class and honor” during the campaign and said he was eager to sit down and talk about how the two of them could work together.

In this case, if change equals socialism. Nobody seems to know what kind of "change" they want. Change is all fine and it was necessary, but not all change is good. I would like to rally around this and try to be enthusiastic, but when an honest American like Joe the Plumber asks a question and gets his private life ripped open and he's publicly ridiculed by the candidate...is this the kind of change we want? Do we want change where the "rich" who are the employers are going to get taxed and that will result in higher consumer prices for ALL of us here at the bottom, plus loss of jobs as companies cut costs? but that's okay - the government's going to "take care of us all". We don't need to work.

I'm one of those at the bottom who "should" receive great benefits from this. We are technically below the poverty line. But I dont' want their dirty money and I dont' want a handout.

Yes, change is what this country is all about, but at what cost?
Somebody help me out here, because the only ONLY good thing I can find is that an African American was elected president. That' wonderful. That's historic. Where he will take this nation AND our economy, God only knows.

Amen ST,
That is all the majority heard, FREE HANDOUTS. Unfortunately, there won't be much wealth to re-distribute, as anyone with any sense will simply produce less to keep from being TAXED to DEATH, or move operations to somewhere else, like say, Mombassa Kenya, the Homeland of our Newly Elected Socialist Dictator. Has America lost her mind?

I am extremely excited and happy about Obama's election. It's a shame we can't come together as a nation, as McCain said in his speech last night, and open those closed minds to what will be very exciting times in American history. Sounds as if there will be some extremely misguided and overly reactive people who may never do this, as indicated by the statements above me, and that is truly a shame. Those kinds of people scare me infinitely more than anyone elected to public office.

So you're "scared" because I'm asking you to help me out here. WHAT exactly are you excited about? Please tell me because I would like nothing more to unite and rally around this president, but in all honesty, this man is completely against the Constitution and all that this country had always fought and died for.

Please tell me what exactly YOU expect to happen. How will things change for the better for you and what makes you think that one man will do that for you and your life?
Honestly, I am not being "hostile" or "scary". I just want to know. But I guess you would rather my questions be silenced like Joe the Plumber?

Hate to disappoint you Susan, but my mind is wide open. I would love to rally around a Legal President who had the good of OUR Nation in mind. However, the rhetoric and affiliations of Nobama scare me much worse than your statements above, and that is saying a lot!!!!! Shocked

That is the problem with the 'NEW' America, everyone thinks they are 'Entitled" to a new car, big house, vacations, steak every night, etc. They forgot how hard work and intellect built this country, now many will sit around and wait for their 'Re-distribution' check. This is going to be a Nightmare and I feel sorry for the 'Closed-minded' people who can't see past the end of their nose. Rolling Eyes

Since you asked, I'm excited about the Republicans being out of office. I'm excited about a president who has an IQ higher than most voters, for the first time in 8 years. People can rant about "socialism" and "dictatorship" all they want. It makes them sound uneducated and closed minded and that is what scares me. Extremists use those words in fear and to excite fear, and I believe that is reprehensible.

While other extremists try to mute the truth which is equally reprehensible. We'll see how happy you are in 6 months sue, maybe some IQ checks ARE in order. Wink

Tough sledding ahead. Weak economy, Massive national debt, A president that was elected by women and minorities. That leaves out most of the people who make things happen.

We will survive this as we have other democratic presidents and some other republican presidents.

What we will see now is if a man with very few qualifications can keep us afloat.

Hey, rant and rave all you want...oops, you already are! If anybody mutes truth or ideas, it's the conservatives, the book banners and burners of America. Talk about muting the truth, what about the man who stood up in front of America and claimed there were weapons of mass distruction in Iraq to justify a war?

And I didn't vote for an man who was in office for 8 years who provided that weak economy and massive national debt. Why is that the Republicans think their party is the only party that can fix the damage that their party has done?

Go for it...rant, rave. I just serves to make you look like sore loosers. Go plug into some Rush Limbaugh and keep chanting "say it ain't so, Joe"!

Unfortunately your post is more of a rant, which is what people do when they don't understand a given situation. Nobody said anything about any of the topics in your last Post. This is about our new President, not the old or the future one.

Personally, I think Bush could have done a lot of things better as most Presidents could have, but that doesn't mean America had to go the the 'Extreme' of what occurred last night.

I also agree with you that Nobama has a Higher IQ than most of his voters. He pulled the wool over the majority of misguided eyes in this great country. That just makes him a 'shyster' to me, becuase his true intentions have been pouring out of his mouth on various interviews and News Reports, but hey, that's ok, we're going to get a check for it. WOW!!! Rolling Eyes

Wow, what a huge insult that is to all women and minorites...you mean you truly believe that white men are the only people who make things "happen" in America? Oh man, wow. I'd hate to be you right about now. Wow, wow.
