I was doing an review of alternative sites to make sure I'm not missing out on a hot venue and I noticed something that I have not seen addressed previously

OLA and Bidville have a disproportionate number of Sports Cards Listings verses anything else. For OLA their site claims 6 million listings, of which nearly 5 million are sports cards.

I even see OLA touting their increased number of listings, but from what I saw, that increase has been in sports cards, from 4 to 5 million.

What's even more troubling, when I look at the sites category totals, I cannot find the other million listings.

Using ebay as for comparison they currently have 370,000 sports card listings. Thats abouts 5%.

On Bidville it's almost 75%.

On OLA it's almost 83%.

What going on? What am I missing? Comments?

I owe you a better explanation. on e-bay. when I post 500 cards with the starting price of $0.99. and only half sales. I would still have to pay e-bay listing fees for all 500 cards. total cost for just the listing fees $125.00. e-bay would makes more out of the deal then I do.
on ola.com. for $8.00 a month I can place as many auctions as I wish, with no additional charges. no relistment fees. no sale fees.
so it make sense if you sell any large collection. sell it on ola.com. Not to long ago e-bay would have had many more than 400,000 sports cards listed. But there increase in fees has caused many sports card sellers to go else were.

are sport cards still strong enough to justify the time to create 5 million listings? obviously you didn't do 5 million listings yourself, but that seem like a load of work to list 5m.

About the work, When I posted on e-bay. I posted about 100 items a day. if these cards didn't sell I would have to re list them again. or leave them off. On ola if an item dose not sell. I can set them to re list automatically. so my auction count expands every day. my buyer have a larger choice of items to look at.
I can seller my item cheaper on ola. when I post an item on ola. I don't have to worry that it must sell or I will lose money. If it doesn't sell this week. It might sell next week. It still only costing me $8.00 a month.

Hello Sportscards,
I also have a nagging question about OLA.com and that is why do no pictures ever show up?
For the last 3 months or so, whenever they last redesigned the site, no pictures will load correctly for me. Not one picture comes up when I view an auction listing.
I was maybe thinking I must have to sign in to the site before a picture loads? Is that right? It seems like not a very good idea to require a potential customer to sign in before they can browse the auction listings...
I am 100% hopeful for alternative auction sites to develop into viable selling platforms, but I don't hold much promise when no pictures load. I don't have this problem with any other site?
You may not be aware of any problems, so I thought I would ask the nagging question that has bothered me for so long......

coyote:
During the upgrade a few MONTHS ago we all had problems with the new OLA site.
Since then, OLA has operated easily for it's regsitered users/sellers.

Some things sell well over there while more unique items (such as mine) take more more time to move no matter where you post them IMHO.
For what I pay annually at OLA, it's well worth the $$ I pay for the results and offsite sales! Very Happy

Online sellers must look at the year-end results and at what they pay in fees for those results in STR & FVF... Some things sell well at XXX site, while they don't sell at CCC site.
