Ebay still makes everyone jump to their game, because they can.
Yahoo is in panic mode, and if THEY are, surely other sites should be shaking in their meeting room discussions over how they will drive buyers to their sites. Yahoo is hoping to stop loss of sellers through removal of fees, but until and unless they invest capital to drive buyers to their auctions, it's a wasted effort. FREE TO LIST does not work for buyers. And after all, buyers are what make a site successful.
Ebay's latest acquisition of a search driven system to steer business to their site is going to hurt other auction sites who can't seem to get the search engine results to THEIR listings.
The fight for buyer market share is going to boil down to who can drive results through search engines to their sites. Forget name recognition, forget appealing to sellers, all monies need to be headed into the buyer side of the equation. Sellers will go where sales are driven......sellers are connected enought through information such as here on PSU to know what sites are working well and which are not.
So where the buyers go, the sellers will gather in increasing numbers.
How do you attract buyers who return? Search engine results. |

Is Yahoo being free necassarily all that great? All I hear are stories of Yahoo neglecting to put any effort into their auction site. All these small sites that are working hard and seem to have the right ideda from bottom up will certainly feel a major blow froim the recent fee restructuring, and yet the majority of sellers will gladly flock to the new venue to build up another segment of an already monster corporation. I know that's capitalism and sure many of us here will gladly take advantage of the situation, but those running Yahoo are no better than those running eBay, although they seem to have figured out a smarter marketing strategy to convince us to join their team. I'm not saying posting there is any way wrong, or that I won't do it myself, but that there are actions and reactions, and yahoo beating eBay might only lead auction sellers to support another giant who holds no loyalties to those at the bottom, the sellers.
Ofcourse I'm not saying that we have any control over this process. We've done more than many thought would be in within our reach trying to promote new sites who are competing with the great eBay. Just a little warning that in the end Yahoo is still eBay corporate thinking with different techniques. The CS I imagine will get worse, scams will be as bad as on eBay, and select sellers will be lucky to be on the good side of Yahoo stuff and will get a blind eye turned to them as they play outside of the rules. Remember, fees can play small role in what makes many auciton sites a good or bad place to sell at. |

I will likely post a few things round...but I won't flock. I will not stay if CS is not there nor will I stay if the ads get any worse. They have to prove themselves first. And even then I will not list there exclusively. In fact it will not be my main base even if they prove anything. We have already seen what these monsters are capable of. Not getting sucked into that ever again!!! |

Everyone keeps talking about how important search engine results are. I went to google and did a sample search for popular items in dvds, cds, videos, designer clothing, crystal, books, etc. I looked through the first 3-4 pages of each search. I got only a few to lead to auctions - a couple of Ebay links, a few amazon, some yahoo shopping, but for the most part it was just a big variety of other various sites. Not a load from any one of these. And not ONE link was for any of the small auction sites that we've all been looking at. Even the ones with the seo.
I don't know if these searches turn up the same results everytime? But, I have to wonder how important they really are. How many pages deep do people really look? I usually only look at the first 2 pages, but maybe that's just me. |

I have found the ones I trust!!!! It takes time, sometimes disappointment! But, we learn and grow from that. We then know what to expect!

Uh huh...cool huh?? I like making a memorable impact!!! hehehehehehe
Round...I agree with Speedy. You take the sites....you look at the issues and what people say...the attitudes of the owners or the reps....and decide which ones look and feels right.
So far Ebid, TAM and Bidchaser are the auction sites I am hanging with. I will try Yahoo...but not deal with it exclusively. And I will give Loudfrog a try as well but it isn't an actual auction site. |
