PostPosted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 3:58 am   Post subject:  Php Probid International Requirements #1  Back to top

Hi,

finally I've decided to use phpprobid, but I'd like to know if there is someone here who uses this requirements:

I'd like to have an international probid site, which means I'd like to have people from different countries buying/selling in the same site/database, having by default the chance to search the products of their nations, but also having the chance to see other countrys' products.

And the second requirement would be to recognize the ip of the person, and show the proper language (altough I could do that outside the phpprobid).

Does the probid allow it, or is there any addon or third party component with this characteristics?

Thanks!

Now I only have to find an add on that allow to search by countries and I'll be ready Very Happy

Pituti, just double check that that mod works in 6.04 before purchasing.

For mods that are 6.04 compliant try this site...

http://www.probidv6mods.com/

I'm running several of the mods. And transfered an rscript database to ppb 6.04 on July 28.

Be careful. You can have as many languages as you wish, but the listings will still be in the original language. So if a user needs to read Russian for the menus, do you think they can read the English listing?

If you want an international site, you will probably need to use several sub-domains or do clever things with cookies.

thanks for the comment alan, it's a very clever one. I've thought already about it, but if I have several sub-domains, I suppose I need different installations, which means different databases and people won't be able to buy in all the different countries with the same user... am I right?

It is a pity phpprobid doesn't have as oscommerce or zencart the chance to enter the info of the listings in so many languages as the site has.

I'll think about it :-/

I hope you didn't take that badly, it wasn't meant to be a criticism.

At Kaqoo we do the clever things with cookies to make it work, but I honestly don't suggest you even think about it unless you are an EXPERT. (In big letters to make the point, this is NOT easy)

I am not a phppb expert or anything like it, but you do not need separate databases on most installations even if you are having many languages.

You do need to use unicode for the languages, which phppb probably uses. You will also need your db's to use unicode.

On Kaqoo we warn people that they do not need extra language packs because unless you speak, say, Russian, how do you handle the customer service emails?

Regarding users, I go back to the point that a user who needs to see the site directions in Russian, probably doesn't read listings in English; otherwise he would look at the English website........

An example:

I owned a 1959 Mercedes which I could not find parts for in the UK, so, I looked on ePay Germany and found the parts I needed, none of the listings were in English, but I speak a little German so I knew what was listed. I managed to buy my parts.

The language of business is English, why not just stick to it? If your first language is not English, stick to your first language. It is so difficult to make anything out of another online auction, that you need to make sure you can handle the first, before looking to branch out into foreign languages!

I only offer this advice because I know the pitfalls; Kaqoo has translations in Portuguese and Magyar, but we do not list them on our site because we have no-one to handle the CS.

JMO.

please man, I really meant it, thanks for you help, sometimes it's great to hear the opinion of someone from the outside, specially someone like you already dealed with something similar.

I took a look at your site and I really like it, but the biggest problem I see from my side, it is that the main/original place would be spain, where is difficult (i don't wanna say impossible Very Happy) to use any other language as spanish, and I would like to make it compatible with at least germany.

The best way I can imagine it is to set spanish, english and german, create a generic mail in the three languages at the same time, and let everyone to see the display in the local language...

Surprised

Ich danke dir noch mal Wink

pituti,

You can always spend an afternoon translating into Spanish; we have an ongoing translation project! As the Software is free, it can be your way of pay back! It will save you forking out cash.

All our emails are translatable in the Site Management menu.

German is done, English/UK is done, now you only need Swedish.............

I still think this is the wrong way to go......... Your English is good enough, use and stick to it.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Alan, that's a good point. I was considering language packs, but at the end of the day, why bother? I'm launching a niche site, and what will be sold on the site is primarily in English anyway.

Pituti, where in Spain are you?

Hi pituti
All you have to do is join the phpprobid forum there you will get all the infomation you need for the phpprobid software, if you want different language packs then thats NO problem either, you will have to pay for them and some of the modders will put them on your site for you as well.

There are so many mods for the phpprobid software.
