OK - this is way off-topic, thus posting in general chat.

I've got an 8-9 year old dog - he's a rescue baby.

Anyway, last night he was laying in the entry and was obviously sleeping. I came walking out of my bedroom, pillow and blankets covering my face, and tripped - over and on to my dog.

He yelped - different than I'd ever heard, and I of course went face first onto the tile. I was saved as I fell perfectly on the pillows and blankets, but he went and hid under my bed.

Today, he's limping very badly. It's a front paw/leg, and while it seems to be 'better' with time today, he's still treating it very tenderly. Sad Sad

I feel so badly - and don't know what to do. Do I watch him for a day/two? Do I take him in for an x-ray? Can I give him a baby aspirin? He's 60 lbs, so not a baby.

He has not 'cried' or 'yelped' today (as if in pain). And he's been walking around gingerly, and tail wagging when 'want'.

Anybody with ideas, greatly appreciated. I can't really tell if there is any swelling or not....if that helps!

TIA! Sad Sad Crying or Very sad

Give him 5 mg of aspirin per pound of the dog's weight every 12 hours. Don't use coated aspirin. If he doesn't feel better in a couple of days take him to the vet. Just my opinion, I'm not a vet.

I agree....

It wont hurt to wait a day or so..

you would almost definately know if it was broken, but may have a hairline fracture that you may not notice...Hence the short wait will not be bad...

Have you done any kind of manipulation of the "hurt" limb? It could possibly tell you if it is just a muscle/bruise or something more...

Just my thoughts...

Well, if it were me, I would NOT give him any aspirin without consulting a vet as that could kill him. You probably already have but don't push your luck. Do you have a vet that you can just call and get advise from? If so, that is what I would do. Good Luck and I hope he is okay.

I agree with Sky..call Vet prior to giving anything,
and (IMHO) go ahead and take him in if he is still
favoring the leg. (could also be in the hip) and like
humans that can be worse than the leg even.
Erin..it hurts so bad when our sweet 'furbie' friends
hurt..
Praying for the baby and you also..
Much love and hugs from,

2BoysandToys,
I don't know what your situation is and vets can be expensive but I have to admit that I would take him in if he is at all favoring his leg (or as Dep said, it could very easily be his hip) If you can't, at least try to call and be very careful about ever giving an animal aspirin.

Hi Erin,

It probably wouldn't hurt to observe him for a couple of days. If you have any fish oils & flax oil, that's good for inflammation and very safe - a couple caps or equivalent of the liquid daily would be helpful. The aspirin (never Tylenol) might help, but it bothers some dog's stomachs, just like people.

If you can massage him gently around his back and leg, you may be able to find out the problem area, and they love that anyway. If the limp continues or gets worse, you'll certainly want to get him in for an x-ray.

I hope you patient is better soon!

Shelley

My vet charges less than $40 for a visit. I'd take him in and have the vet look at him if he were mine.

Thanks all - very much appreciated! I've not 'yet' given him any aspirin, and he's been very calm/still. I did spend a variety of time yesterday trying to isolate the area of 'injury'. It appears to be at the first joint above the foot/paw.

The more he moves around with it, the more he used it (yeserday). And - he ate, which made me feel better (less guilty). I've put a call into the vet this AM and waiting to see if they want to see him or if I should possibly wait another day/two.

I feel so bad and guilty, and my youngest son keeps telling me to not blame myself. It's kind of cute to watch him stress over me stressing about our doggie....

I'll keep you all posted! I hesitated to give aspirin only due to not having any (straight up aspirin).

Again, thanks to all for your input! Sad Sad

(((Erin))) things happen. But it does break your heart when you accidentally hurt your fur baby. I nearly stepped on mine this morning!

I agree with Jo and your lil one..don't be hard on
yourself.. Our pup is small and we have tripped
on her at times..He loves you and just do what you feel is right and of course offer favorite treats and
lots of love.
Be good to you today, dear..

2BoysandToys,
I know I would feel guilty and bad as well but don't let it eat at you. It was an accident and I would be willing to bet your dog knows that, forgives you, and still loves you. Eating is always a good sign. Smile I hope he will continues to get better as the days go on.

skydragon - thanks so much.....he's not really improving but he's eating and of course, loving the attention.

Do you all think that dogs are smart enough to 'manipulate'? My youngest son was sitting with him, loving and petting him - and both his paws were planted on the ground. I came into the front room from another room - and the dog raised the 'hurt leg/paw'.

We are trying to figure out what that's all about! The vet did suggest I give him 2 baby aspirin and see how that works for him. So, we did about 1 hour ago and are watching to make sure he doesn't get sick. He ate right after - so timing was awesome!

We got storms coming out way - off for the evening - at least a bit. Cool Cool
